We took possession of the little house in Bear in the middle of a exceptional mid-Atlantic deep freeze. Our poor little house was frozen under a layer of snow and ice. The first order of busines was getting warm air and water flowing through its arteries again. That’s done and now we’re inside working away. It’s pretty rough right now but it’s going to be a shining gem when we’re done. Here are some before pictures. Stayed turned for more.

The outside work will have to wait until the snow and ice is gone but plenty to do inside!!
Not very welcoming right now but this is going to be transformed into a warm and welcoming first step into a beautiful home
This dingy neglected kitchen is going to be a clean, bright, beautiful space for cooking, baking and grabbing that morning cup of coffee
Lots of cleanup in here but then it will become a comfy, cozy family room for movie night, sports on the big screen, or falling asleep on the couch!

The primary bedroom has lots of potential to become a private quiet sanctuary for the new owner

    It looks like you’ve got a lot of work ahead of you–I can’t wait to see the “after” pictures!!! I’ll bet that it’s fun to have a bank canvas!!

    Hi Kim,

    You might want to test for mold. The ceiling in the 4th picture has a lot of leaks and there are moisture marks along the length of the joists. It might need some mold remediation, or at least some heavy duty ozoning. Kilz is not going to stop the mold, if there is any. I hope the subflooring under that carpet is okay. Oh my, that all just looks plain scary to me!!!

    Did your business partner go in the attic and look at the joists to make sure there was no wood rot? Or, get a roofer to check it?

    I am writing this so you will not have any lawsuits in the future when you sell the house if there is some missed damage to the joists. And, if you are helping with the remodel, no mold or fungus allergen will trigger any kind of asthma/allergy attack.

    Hopefully all is well and no extra remediation will need to be done, and you will end up making lots of happy $$$$!!!

      Thanks for the advice. We are aware of the mold. There’s more in the basement. It will be remediated. The roof will be replaced (also knew that going in) and joists can be examined then. The carpet goes in the trash and some of the subfloor will be replaced. Most of it is okay.
